The Chateau of the Loire No 5 - Chateau d'Amboise

                         Chateau d'Amboise
Chateau d'Amboise
The Chateau at Amboise is best seen from the Bridge over the River Loire and can be approached from Tours to the West and from La Richardière to the South.

The Chateau was in existence, as a building, for many years before it was officially founded as a Chateau, in 1431, by the then King of France - King Charles VII who began the tradition of French Kings residing and holding court at Amboise.

In the 15th and 16th centuries, the court of France continued to be based in Amboise, although some Kings preferred the Châteaux of Loches and Chinon to the fortified Château of Amboise. Charles VIII developed the Chateau by ordering the construction of new buildings and a chapel. He introduced innovative methods of heating the Chateau and employed French masons, Flemish sculptors, and Italian artisans: carpenters, gardeners and architects. His young cousin, François, the future François 1st (Premiére) was educated at Amboise and chose to live there when he became King. He gave a pension and a retirement home to Leonardo da Vinci, just down the road at Clos Luce (1516-1519).

A thoroughly recommended visit. There is so much French history connected with this Chateau that it is probably worth a 2 day visit to include Clos Luce.

2017 - December Newsletter

Christmas in the local Villages.

With snow falling in many parts of Europe the feeling that Christmas is upon us is confirmed by the number of Christmas Markets which spring up all around La Richardière at this time of the year and the feverish activity in each village preparing Christmas decorations.

Recently, we worked with villagers in Le Petit Pressigny to prepare decorations for the festive season. A long standing tradition.

The two villages to the North of us - La Celle Geunand and Ferriere-Larçon held their Christmas Markets this last weekend. There were a large number of stall holders selling everything from Christmas cheese collections to crafted tinsel ornaments and a whole host of local wine and food products were also available. Entertainment was provided by groups of carol singers, in Victorian costume, adding to the overall ambience of the events. Despite the cold and inclement weather they were well-attended giving a chance for last minute Christmas shopping and pre-Christmas gatherings with neighbours and friends.

Restaurant and Eating experiences near to La Richardière:

Restaurant and Eating experiences:

Whenever we go on holiday it's always nice to eat out and sample the local delicacies and traditions of the region we are visiting. It's also a welcome change from cooking for ourselves.

Around La Richardière there are a large number of restaurants and eating place which are well worth a visit.

La Promenade is top of the list for us.  A Michelin starred restaurant just 3 mins from La Richardière in the village of Le Petit Pressigny. For our guests we offer a taxi service and menu recommendations.
La Promenade, Le Petit Pressigny

The food is exquisitely served and each course, not to mention the "amuse bouche", is a theatrical event. We recommend the Traditional Menu which gives a wide range of dishes for each of the courses 3 or 4 if you choose the fish course (and we recommend you do!).

The ambiance of the restaurant is relaxed and only a little formal, so no need to dress up, unless you want to. You will be welcomed by Madame Dallais and served by the very professional staff. The Sommelier, Xavier, is well-respected in the area and will give you unrivalled advice about your wine choices.

Through the summer months at least one set of guests visit La Promenade and we always get good feedback, so, why not book your next holiday with us and sample the excellent food at La Promenade.
